Simon is Director of the Haydn Green Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Visiting Professor at Ghent University. He is editor of the Journal of Technology Transfer and his research interests address technology entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship education and building a culture of innovation. He is co-author of the popular books, Ingenuity and Building an Entrepreneurial Organisation and has published his research within leading academic journals such as Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, Research Policy, Journal of Management Studies, Academy of Management Learning & Education and periodicals such as the Washington Post and the Financial Times. He is chair of the award winning Young Entrepreneurs Schemes that have developed the entrepreneurial skills of over 5000 academic researchers. Simon has held research and management posts at Akzo Nobel and Courtaulds.

Simon is module convenor of Innovation and Technology Transfer, a module for PhD students to help understand the process of commercialising university technology. He is also module convenor of Innovation Management, an MBA elective module that addresses how to build a culture of innovation within organisations.

Simon's current research considers technology entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship education and building a culture of innovation. Specifically he is investigating the changing culture of innovation within higher education and the relative impact of entrepreneurship curriculum, entrepreneurs in residence, academic entrepreneurs, student entrepreneurs, local entrepreneurial ecosystems and university management process, strategy and policy. He is also investigating the potential impact of universities upon social innovation, including entrepreneurship within disadvantaged groups and technology for social good.

Simon is currently collaborating on the following projects:

  • EPSRC CDT in Sustainable Chemistry: Atoms-2-Products an Integrated Approach to Sustainable Chemistry
