Research - American and Canadian Studies
We are the largest American and Canadian Studies department in Europe and pursue an ambitious research strategy in the field of North American literature, history, culture and politics.
The Department of American & Canadian Studies at Nottingham is delighted that 96% of its research activity was assessed as ‘world-leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’ according to the results of the REF2021 (Research Excellence Framework), the national assessment of UK university research. This places us 3rd among 23 submissions for Area Studies.
62% of our publications were assessed as 'world-leading' and our Impact Case Studies, which describe partnerships with businesses, charities, and other academic partners from around the world, have been assessed as having 'outstanding' or 'very considerable' impact.
Our multidisciplinary research has developed solutions to address some of the most complex challenges of our time. They have helped put modern slavery survivor voices at the heart of antislavery efforts and led to transformations in the way universities, UK funding bodies, and third-sector organisations engage with Black and Minority Ethnic communities.
