Biography

I hold a BA in Arts and Humanities from the Open University of Israel and an MA in Communication and Journalism from the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. My PhD at the University of Nottingham was on the subject of authorship as a promotional discourse in the U.S. media industries. Before joining the department at Nottingham I taught at the University of Shantou, Guangdong, China.

Expertise Summary

The focus of my academic career has been on the subject of value creation and negotiation, from both an industry- and audience studies perspectives. My MA dealt with the transformation of fan communities in a digital participatory culture and the intersections of genre, authenticity, and identity for fandom. My PhD examined media authorship as branding and the paratexual construction of author figures as celebrities and cultural legitimators in mainstream media including franchise blockbusters, broadcast television, and triple-A video games. I am interested in industry-audience interactions, promotional content and culture, and cultural discourses of creativity and creative work.

As part of my interest in studying media paratexts and promotional surround particularly in the context of digital participatory culture, I have co-led the department's Value of Spreadable Television Content research project, examining the purposes and challenges of British broadcasters' use of short-form content on social media.

My current interest is in environmental sustainability and the screen industries with a focus on the integration of "green" values and logics into production cultures. As part of this I am developing a module on Media and the Ecological Crisis.
