Public Talk - The Law Governing all Laws: Daoism and Happiness

29/4/2021

Nottingham Confucius Institute was delighted to host the second session in the NCI Chinese Philosophy Talk Series on Daoism on 22 April. The Teams talk was again delivered by Manuel Parreno, a China expert who studied Political Science and Chinese language in the US before taking a three-year Masters degree in Chinese Philosophy in China after developing a passion for Daoism.

In this public talk, Manuel examined Laozi's belief in the duality of human nature and argued “we are not masters of our own feelings as we depend on laws governing happiness as we strive to achieve it”. After exploring Laozi's Dao both from its cosmic aspect and as it relates to human beings on a personal level, he reasoned that harmony leads to happiness and it happens naturally when we follow our inner light and act spontaneously within the natural laws that Dao represents.

About thirty University staff, students and members of the general public attended the online event. Several participants thanked the speaker and NCI, expressing how fascinating the talk was and their wish to find out more about Daoism.

The next talk “Understanding Who We Are” is scheduled to take place on 20 May and places can now be booked at https://nci-talk-daoism3.eventbrite.co.uk
