5th May saw 28 Year 7 students and teachers of Magnus CoE Academy attend a fun day of Chinese cultural activities at the Si Yuan Centre, home to Nottingham Confucius Institute (NCI).

Following a short tour around the Jubilee Campus and NCI, the group attended a Guzheng Taster session led by NCI teacher Miss Xi Yang. Xi started the session with a live Guzheng performance winning a big round of applause. She then shared some interesting facts and spoke about the instrument's 2,000 years history before inviting the pupils to have a go at playing it. Almost all the students jumped at the opportunity with several commenting on how amazing it sounded.

The students also attended Tai Chi Fan, Blue Porcelain Painting and Chinese Calligraphy workshops delivered by student volunteers from Nottingham’s MA TCSOL programme in the afternoon. All activities were very enthusiastically received (pictured on the right).

One of the students wrote in her thank you letter to NCI and the TCSOL student volunteers “I am very thankful for going on this trip…I will definitely remember this forever!”; “I will certainly consider this my University when I grow up,” wrote another.

“This is the first time NCI have hosted a face-to-face visit since COVID began over two years ago. We can’t wait to welcome more people to visit NCI and learn Mandarin offline with us soon!” commented Ms Fangfang Xie, NCI Acting Co-Director.
