On the evening of 28 November, the Si Yuan Centre welcomed over 50 University staff, students, and local residents, for the final Mandarin Corner of the term, hosted by the Nottingham Confucius Institute. Led by Mr. Liu Zefu from the Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA), the event ran from 6:30pm to 8:00pm, exploring the theme of Suzhou's classical gardens.
Mr. Liu opened the session with an engaging introduction to the design philosophy and key features of these UNESCO-listed landscapes. Participants then took part in lively garden-themed games—including a fun round of ‘Lubodun(萝卜蹲)’—helping them learn relevant vocabulary in an interactive and social setting.
The evening also featured a creative workshop, where attendees painted their own fridge magnets inspired by traditional Suzhou garden motifs, each leaving with a personalised keepsake.
Blending cultural discovery with informal language practice, this term’s final Mandarin Corner provided a warm and fitting close to the series, strengthening community connections through shared appreciation of Chinese heritage. Event highlights can be viewed here.
