School of Education

Our UNEVOC centre history

The School Education houses the United Kingdom’s UNEVOC centre, formally becoming a UNEVOC centre in 2015 following a long-standing relationship with UNESCO.

Since then, UNEVOC Nottingham has coordinated various activities and hosted various seminars and events under the UNEVOC umbrella including:

  • coordinated the development and editing of the Springer Handbook of Vocational Education and Training (2019)
  • wrote a concept document for UNESCO-UNEVOC work on migration, and acted as convener for UNESCO’s Bridging Innovation and Learning in TVET (BILT) thematic work on Migration and TVET, including hosting a workshop and writing the summary report
  • hosted Borhene Chakroun (UNESCO Director) as a visiting professor at the University of Nottingham and keynote speaker (October, 2019)
  • interacted with other UNEVOC centres, most notably Jamaica, supporting the development of research on greening TVET in partnership with RMIT Centre in Australia, including a joint workshop looking at the future of TVET, hosted in Nottingham
  • linked with the UNEVOC centre in Hong Kong, focused on research methods and research training around vocational education
  • hosted a research methods course for UNEVOC centre members
  • convened the UNESCO-UNEVOC virtual conference on ‘Inclusion in technical and vocational education and training’, organised in collaboration with UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring Report

More recently, UNEVOC Nottingham played a central role in the delivery of the VET Africa 4.0 project and the publication of a book advocating for a new approach to vocational education in Africa that focuses on the social role of TVET and recognises the interplay between a range of stakeholders. The VET Africa 4.0 project generated further work on agricultural extension, refugees and TVET, and work with the South African Department of Higher Education and Training to promote quality lecturers in TVET.
