Study abroad
The University of Nottingham's Faculty of Engineering seeks to offer its students a wide range of opportunities to exchange with partner institutions all over the world, including exchange to our campuses in Malaysia and China. Studying abroad is an education in itself and offers the chance to experience new cultures, gain language skills and increase employability. Regardless of which course you are on, opportunities to study abroad are open to you.
Exchange Programmes
There are three main exchange options for engineering students:
- Inter-Campus exchange
- University-wide programme
- Summer Schools
Inter-Campus Exchange
If you would like the opportunity to spend a year or semester at our overseas campuses in Malaysia or China you can apply to the Inter-Campus Exchange programme.
To be eligible to apply you must be studying for a degree at Nottingham which is also offered at either our Malaysia or China campus and have achieved a minimum of 55% average in the year prior to your departure.

University-wide programme
The University-wide programme is a competitive programme that offers full-time undergraduate students the opportunity to study at one of our university-wide partner institutions for one semester or one academic year, as part of their Nottingham degree programme.
Your choice of institution and duration will depend on which partners your department has determined are the most suitable match for the course you are taking. However, it may be possible to apply for exchange to an institution not on the department list. Any deviation from the pre-approved institutions should be discussed with your department academic advisor.
Some of our partner universities are part of the Universitas 21 (U21) consortium, an international network of leading research-intensive universities, of which The University of Nottingham is a founding member.In order to be considered for this programme, applicants are required to have attained a minimum of 60% in the year prior to their departure, have a good academic reference and a personal statement. These three elements are considered as part of the application process.

Summer Schools
Why study abroad?
International employers are increasingly seeking students with a ‘global awareness’, particularly those who can demonstrate their ability to work in another country by studying abroad during their degree. The Faculty of Engineering recognises this, offering support to students to find an exchange university where they can continue their chosen field of study without extending the length of their degree programme. We have exchange agreements with top universities across the globe, including the Universitas 21 group of highly prestigious research-led universities, and intercampus exchanges with our Malaysian and Chinese campuses.

“Living in Mexico for a year was an incredibly eye opening experience. The chance to learn a new language and culture, taste new food, discover hidden gems, and meet new people were the reasons why I chose to go to Central America. An option most would not consider…an option which I do not regret.
Mexico City is a busy metropolitan of 20 million people, boasting more museums than any other city in the world. Nightlife is special, and Mexicans love to party. A relaxed atmosphere despite its vast size.
Travelling around Mexico was very easy as coach travel is frequent and cheap. During my time there I went on 14 small different trips varying from 1 night to 3, and also a long 3 week trip around the south of the country travelling 1,000km in the process. I ended my journey with an 8 day trip to California, just over the border from Mexico, an opportunity which I did not want to miss.
If you fancy leaving Mexico, flights to nearby countries such as Costa Rica and Guatemala are cheap. Peru and Colombia are also within budget.”

Inter-Campus Malaysia Exchange
"Spending a year of my course in Malaysia was one of the best decisions I ever made. In fact, the option to go out there was one of the reasons that I chose Nottingham to study in the first place, and I’m glad I did.
During the weekends we took the opportunity to visit many of the surrounding islands and neighbouring countries. During the year I made eighteen separate trips to nine different countries, and by making use of local coach routes and low fares airlines it was done on a budget too. There is a wide spectrum of countries to visit, from the more traditional and rural south east Asian destinations such as Vietnam and Cambodia, to the economic powers of Hong Kong and Shanghai through the touristic Thailand and Bali, to name but a few. There is something to suit every taste and sense of adventure."
