Industrial placements for business

We encourage our students to undertake a year in industry as part of their undergraduate course to help them gain vital employability skills. We are always looking to create partnerships with businesses for year-long placements as well as summer internships. The placement team works with a range of companies from large corporations to SMEs to help employers find the right student for their business needs.

FAQs

I have a small business – is this suitable for the scheme?
We work with a range of businesses of varying sizes. The main aims of the scheme are developing the knowledge and skills of our students and providing businesses with experienced students, giving you the opportunity to recruit the most skilled students when they graduate. Therefore, the scheme is suitable for a wide variety of organisations.

How long do placements last?
Students are available to start their placements from the end of June to mid September for 12 months. We also have students looking to undertake summer internships.

What support will I have from the University?
We have a dedicated placements team that can advise you throughout the industrial placement process and provide you with relevant news and updates about the scheme. We can help you promote placement roles within your company and if required can provide rooms for holding interviews. Academic tutors visit students during their placement and students have regular contact with their tutor throughout their placement. All of the support your company receives from our industrial placements team is free of charge.

How much university work are students expected to undertake during their placement?
Our students are expected to act as full-time employees for the duration of their placement. We do not expect them to carry out university work during their employment except a reflective report which is to be submitted at the end of the placement.

What are my responsibilities as a placement employer?
While on placement, students are expected to be employed, treated and paid by the placement employer in the same way as a normal employee. A student on placement will typically earn between £15,000 and £28,000.
