Director of Libraries

The Director of Libraries is responsible for creating a library and learning environment consistent with a world-class university through strategies, policies, systems, collections and services.  The Director of Libraries is actively involved in organisation-wide strategy and policy development and needs to be able to represent the service as a whole in the University and beyond.

The Director is expected to provide strategic direction, vision and leadership for the University’s library and learning technology services across all three campuses – China, Malaysia and the UK – in support of research, teaching and learning. These services include library buildings and space development, customer services, collections (special, print and electronic), information resource strategy and services, and online learning developments.

University of Nottingham Libraries provides a full range of library and learning technology services to the University and closely aligns its strategic development and priorities with Strategy 2020 and University-wide imperatives. The University of Nottingham Libraries puts students and academics at the heart of everything, working in partnership with academic and professional service colleagues to provide the right environment for learners, teachers and researchers to discover, develop, use and share information and learning content in support of knowledge creation and dissemination. Working closely with colleagues across the University’s international campuses, the Department ensures the whole institution shares the same library systems and virtual learning environment.

The Department provides a comprehensive range of services including eight libraries in the UK, over one million print books and journals, 450,000 electronic books and 40,000 e-journals, four million manuscripts - including special collections of international importance; and a full range of learning technologies including the virtual learning environment, Moodle. Services are provided over extensive hours, seven days a week, and 24/7 at key times.

University of Nottingham Libraries has approximately 220 staff distributed around the University’s campuses in the UK, and grouped into six sections: Learning Technology, Manuscripts and Special Collections, Research and Learning Services, Customer Services, Content and Discovery, and Strategy and Planning. In addition, libraries are home to the Transforming Teaching team led by the Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning.

Its wide-ranging services include:

• frontline lending and enquiry services across eight libraries in the UK;
• managing a variety of study spaces;
• information skills teaching;
• acquiring, managing and promoting printed and electronic information resources for research, learning and teaching, including Manuscripts and Special Collections; and
• delivering eLearning services and development of new technologies.

The University of Nottingham Libraries has been at the forefront in driving the learning and technology agenda at the University. In line with the University’s digital transformation programme, Digital Futures, the library has played a key role in enabling flows of information across the organisation and has contributed significantly to the step change seen in the University in relation to digital learning, digitally enabled research, and the way in which Nottingham engages and support students and academics with technology. Alongside this, student engagement lies at the centre of everything the Libraries does, and the Department has an incredibly strong reputation in engaging with students to make key decisions and change systems and processes.
