Accessibility statement for NUsearch

This accessibility statement applies to nusearch.nottingham.ac.uk. NUsearch is local branding for the discovery software Primo, which is produced by the supplier Ex Libris.

This website is run by University of Nottingham Libraries in partnership with our supplier Atmire.

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • The NUsearch search box lacks a label and instructions which can be read by assistive technology. This may make it difficult to locate. It currently has the label ‘Search field’.
  • Images in the results page, databases page and particularly the digital gallery page are incorrectly coded as decorative, so many be inaccessible when using assistive technology.
  • The NUsearch logo lacks alternative text and some headings on the NUsearch homepage are not formatted correctly. This can make the NUsearch homepage difficult to navigate.
  • You may find it difficult to see some parts of NUsearch if visually impaired. This is due to low contrast elements and a problem where facets to narrow down on the results page are not displayed if you zoom to over 125%. You may wish to use a browser plug-in or other assistive technology to enhance contrast.
  • Some missing ARIA attributes may make it tricky to navigate pages using assistive technology.
  • The Library Access video on the NUsearch home page does not have a text equivalent or an audio description, however the text ‘Find out more about the Library Access browser extension’ links to a page where similar if not identical information is provided.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Key functionality

These issues are most likely to affect your use of NUsearch.

  • The search box on all pages lacks a label and instructions which can be read by assistive technology. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.5.3 (label in name) and WCAG 2.1 success criterion 3.3.2 (labels or instructions). We have reported this issue to Ex Libris and are working with them to address.
  • The NUsearch logo has poorly formed alt text so people using assistive technology cannot reading a description of it. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content). We plan to fix this issue by October 2020.
  • Headings on the NUsearch homepage are not coded as such making content difficult to understand. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.6 (heading and labels). We plan to fix this issue by October 2020.
  • Multiple pages have low contrast elements which make them difficult to read. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.3 (contrast). We have reported this issue to Ex Libris and are working with them to address.
  • If you zoom to over 125% the results page no longer displays facets to narrow down results. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.10 (reflow). We have reported this issue to Ex Libris and are working with them to address.

Navigation and accessing information

You may have challenges in navigating NUsearch if using a keyboard or assistive technology. We have reported all these issues to Ex Libris and are working with them to address.

  • All pages have incorrectly applied ARIA attributes, which may limit your ability to navigate through the site using assistive technology. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (info and relationships) and WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 (name, role, value).
  • When entering the ‘Show More’ page it is not possible to tab backwards from the close button. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.1.2 (no keyboard trap).
  • The Interlibrary loan form, My Library Card and My Loans tab are missing page titles. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.2 (page titles).
  • The purpose of some links is not clear in the context of the page. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.4 (link purpose).
  • The keyboard focus indicator is not visible on the ‘Sign in’ button. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.7 (focus visible).
  • On the ‘My Loan’ tab, ‘Add this item’ and ‘Export’ have an incorrect label. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.5.3 (label in name).
  • Most pages have elements marked with duplicate attributes. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.1 (parsing).

Multimedia content

You may have these issues in using multimedia content on the NUsearch webpages.

  • Images in the results page, databases and digital gallery are coded as decorative, and so many be removed from the page on the understanding that this will not affect its function. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content). We have reported this issue to Ex Libris and are working with them to address.
  • Video content on the NUsearch home page does not have a text equivalent or an audio description so would be inaccessible to multiple audiences. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.2.1 (audio-only and video-only) and 1.25 (audio description). We plan to fix this issue by October 2020.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We are actively reviewing content and have introduced new working practices with a focus on user needs and providing inclusive content to our diverse audiences. We are engaging with Ex Libris to advocate for, highlight and develop accessibility requirements. We will consider accessibility a high priority when looking to renew our discovery software contract in May 2021.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 22 September 2020. It was last reviewed on 22 September 2020.

This website was last tested in September 2020. The test was carried out by University Nottingham Libraries. We also referred to the Primo accessibility statement produced by Ex Libris.

We used this approach to deciding on a sample of pages: testing by stratified sampling.

We sampled example pages within the page types NUsearch generates: the home page, advanced search page, results page, Databases and Journals searches and Interlibrary loans request form, and user account pages.
