Biography of Digby Wentworth Bayard Willoughby, 9th Baron Middleton (1844-1922)

The 9th Baron was the eldest son of the 8th Baron Middleton. He was educated at Eton from 1858 to 1862. In the 1860s he served with the Scots Fusilier Guards, retiring as Captain. He succeeded his father in 1877. He took on a number of local administrative and sporting positions, including acting as a J.P. for the East and North Ridings of Yorkshire, Alderman of the East Riding of Yorkshire County Council, and President of the Royal Agricultural Society. For 43 years he was Master of the East Riding Fox Hounds, Lord Middleton's Hunt. He died at Birdsall on 28 May 1922 and was succeeded by his brother, Godfrey Willoughby , as 10th Baron Middleton.

Family

He married Eliza Maria Gordon (1847-1922), only daughter of Sir Alexander Penrose Gordon-Cumming, 3rd Baronet, in 1869. They had no children.

Archive Collections

  • A series of letters to the 9th Baron and his wife, 1890-1922, appear in the fourth accrual of the Middleton Collection (Mi 4 F) held at Manuscripts and Special Collections at the University of Nottingham.
  • Title deeds, settlements, estate and legal papers relating to the 9th Baron's ownership of the Willoughby estates are part of the Middleton Collection held in Manuscripts and Special Collections at the University of Nottingham.
