Addressing Malnutrition

Addressing Malnutrition - Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN)

Total Parenteral Nutrition is the administration of a nutritional solution into the superior vena cava or other main vein. The solution consists of glucose, proteins, vitamins, minerals and fat and should be considered as a means of enabling the individual to meet their full nutritional requirements (Anderson, Keith, Novak and Elliot, 2002).

TPN should be considered if the gastro-intestinal tract is non-functioning (Kemp, 2001).

What type of patients may have non-functioning gastro-intestinal tracts?
