Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Answers to commonly asked questions about studying Pharmacy at The University of Nottingham.
Q How do I hand in my coursework?
A Most modules on the MPharm now require you to submit your coursework electronically via the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Moodle. If you are required to hand in a hard copy, you can do so at your nearest Student Service Centre
Q How do I get my marked work back?
A If you have submitted your coursework via Moodle you will usually receive your feedback electronically. Written feedback may also be returned in a workshop or a lab class, or you may be asked to collect a hard copy from the nearest Student Service Centre
Q Are Industrial Summer Placements available?
A Yes – there are limited summer placement opportunities available at companies such as Pfizer and AstraZenica. Students are responsible for sourcing their own summer placements, however the School will run a session in Oct/Nov to provide guidance in this area.
Q Is there a dress code for Pharmacy?
A Students are required to dress professionally when attending placements (i.e. smart trousers/skirt, shirt/blouse and smart shoes). In addition to this, placements in the hospital setting require students to be ‘bare below the elbow’ (i.e. short sleeves, no watches, etc) in order to comply with infection control procedures. Further details are provided in the placement handbook in the Pharmacy student dress code document.
Q If I need a letter confirming I’m a student here what should I do?
A Official documents and letters can be ordered online from the Student Service Centre
Q Can I go home before the end of term?
A Students should be present at university until the end of each term/semester, even though lectures and exams may finish earlier. The main reason for this is that a teaching activity or an exam may need to be re-scheduled to the end of a semester. Going home early will not be classed as an ‘extenuating circumstance’ for missing any re-scheduled last minute exam/lecture and exams missed without good cause receive a mark of zero.
Q Will I get help finding a pre-registration placement?
A To become a UK-registered pharmacist you must successfully complete a one-year pre-registration training placement after graduating from the four-year MPharm. Whilst it is your responsibility to secure this placement you will be given lots of help and support. We have a member of staff dedicated to giving advice and support and pre-registration placements are regularly advertised in School. In addition we run a pre-registration roadshow for all students in Year 3, which is attended by a variety of employers.
Q How will I be contacted during my time at the university?
A Contact will usually be made via your university email address which you will be expected to check on a regular basis. Other forms of electronic communication will be through Moodle, ePARS, the student portal and notice-boards. You will be given further information when you arrive.
Q Is there a prayer room at the School?
A Whilst there is not a prayer room within the School of Pharmacy, there is a prayer room very close by in the Portland Building. In addition there are Chaplains available to support students of all faiths and none
Q How do I apply to spend a year or semester at the Malaysia Campus?
A The School organises a Study Abroad Information Event in late October/early November each year where you will have the opportunity to find out more of the opportunity to apply to study for either one semester or a full academic year in Malaysia in Year 2 and the application process. You will also have the opportunity to hear of the experiences of students who have studied in Malaysia. In the meantime find out more about study in Malaysia on the Study Abroad section of our website
