Centre for Aerospace Manufacturing

To develop and apply automated assembly processes to the assembly of composite panels and metallic wing ribs, considering interaction between automation and manual operations.

Validation and Integration of Manufacturing Enablers for Future Wing Structures

  • Define and optimise the assembly operations to meet the production rates anticipated for the A350 programme and other future programmes
  • Take concepts from TRL2 to TRL4, through demonstration of key and novel aspects of the automation process, and provide business case to develop to TRL6

Impact / Results

Demonstrated automated assembly processes and enabling operations including:

  • Component identification
  • Sealant application
  • Part inspection
  • Safety systems
  • Production logistics
  • Paint dabbing on fastener tails
