Capabilities

The Centre for Additive Manufacturing has a comprehensive understanding of additive manufacturing (AM) processes, materials, and design systems, with a focus on multi-material and multifunctional applications. Our group boasts a diverse set of experts in areas such as design systems and optimisation methodologies, AM processes, materials development, and AM business management.

The activity of the CfAM spans across both the fundamental and applied research. The research group members hold expertise in multiple key areas, including:

  • Design systems and optimisation methodologies
  • Additive Manufacturing processes
  • Materials Development
  • AM business management
  • Applications demanded by the user community

We are committed to conducting high-quality research and delivering impactful results that have the potential to revolutionise the future of additive manufacturing. Our capabilities extend beyond established single-material 'passive' AM processes and applications, as we explore next-generation, multi-material/multifunctional AM processes, materials, and design systems.

CfAM’s expertise in both single and multi-material and multifunctional AM, and our user-centred and scientifically driven research approach underpins the research, understanding, discovery and development of processes, materials and computational methods necessary for the successful execution and implementation of AM as a viable manufacturing tool.

Industry Links

CfAM’s expertise is centred on next generation processes and materials for additive manufacturing. We achieve this through a combination of forefront scientific research and extensive collaboration with our industry partners. Our group's success is driven by our excellent links with industry, which has allowed us to build strong relationships with partners in a range of sectors, including:

  • healthcare
  • aerospace and defence
  • electronic devices
  • automotive
  • sustainable energy devices

Our focus on next-generation processes and materials for additive manufacturing means that we are at the forefront of innovation in this field. Our research is constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible with additive manufacturing, and our collaboration with industry partners allows us to develop practical solutions that can be implemented in real-world settings.

Our links with industry have been one of the key factors in our success. By working closely with our partners, we are able to understand their specific needs and challenges, and develop new approaches. CfAM has ongoing collaborations with many of the world’s leading companies, including AstraZeneca, BAE Systems, Canon Production Printing, Dstl, GSK, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, National Physical Laboratory (NPL), Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, Texas Instruments and Wolfson Foundation. Our commitment to forefront scientific research, coupled with our collaborative approach, allows us to develop innovative solutions that have real-world impact.
