Effective Police Station Legal Advice in Times of Austerity
The British Academy/Leverhulme provided a small grant to fund a comparative study of police station legal advice in Belgium, England and Wales, Ireland, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
Dr Vicky Kemp was responsible for managing this project and undertaking the fieldwork in the UK and Ireland. Dr Miet Vanderhallen and Enide Maegherman, from the University of Maastricht, were commissioned to carry out the research tasks in Belgium and the Netherlands.

When conducting the fieldwork the same methodology was adopted and a total of 33 semi-structured interviews were undertaken with defence lawyers and legal aid policy officials in the six jurisdictions. The reports also adopt the same format when providing information on: the organisation of police station legal advice, how legal advice is provided, and the organisation of criminal legal aid, including remuneration and how this can impact on the quality of police station work. Also explored is the extent to which technology is being used in the criminal process and research participants were asked for their views on the Police Station App.
An integrated analysis will be undertaken of the six country reports and the key findings will be published in an international peer-reviewed academic journal.
