New chemical sponge has potential to lessen the carbon footprint of oil industry

Description
Scientists from the School of Chemistry have discovered a ground-breaking technique with the potential to dramatically reduce the amount of energy used in the refinement of crude oil. Professor Martin Schröder and Dr Sihai Yang have led a multi-disciplinary team of scientists from Nottingham, ISIS Neutron Facility, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Diamond Light Source, to discover a porous material that works like a chemical sponge to separate a number of important gases from mixtures generated during crude oil refinement.

Nottingham/GSK drug discovery research published

Description
Over the last three years, medicinal chemists at GSK have been collaborating with staff and students in the School, to discover a new treatment for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) a life threatening lung disease. The research, which was carried out by 4th yr MSci chemistry students, has now been published in a prestigious journal (DOI: 10.1021/ml5002079).

Join us for our March Science Public Lecture with Dr Sidahmed Abayzeed from the University of Nottingham Faculty of Engineering. Sidahmed is an Assistant Professor of Bioengineering, Optics and Photonics at the Faculty of Engineering. His talk will explore how cutting-edge light microscopes can now visualise the faintest whispers of electricity as they pass between living cells.
