Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the Faculty of Science

The Faculty takes equality and diversity very seriously and  is committed to providing an inclusive environment for all staff and students to enable them to achieve their potential. We therefore welcome applications from all persons and offers of work and places to study are made solely on the basis of merit.

Each School contains an active Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee and outreach programme aimed at, amongst other things, improving the number of women who study science at all levels.

Women working in the SPMIC on International Women’s Day 2017 - one cleaner, 10 PhD students, two professors, two secretaries, seven mothers (of whom five are physicists), 20 physicists.

Our schools

You can view the equality, diversity and inclusion policies and schemes for each of the schools in our faculty below, along with committee personnel and details any achievements such as Athena SWAN awards.

School Committees

Each School contains an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion committee, which develops and implements strategies and policies to ensure that staff and students are treated solely on the basis of their merits, abilities and potential, regardless of gender, race, colour, nationality, ethnic/national origin, age, socio-economic background, disability, religious/political beliefs, family circumstances or sexual orientation.

They have representation from academic, technical, research and administrative staff together with undergraduate and postgraduate students.

School policies

In addition to implementing the University's Equality & Diversity strategies, our schools also offer:

  • paid maternity leave for Home/EU postgraduate research students
  • informal flexible working
  • reduced teaching and administration duties for staff returning from maternity leave
  • School meetings, events and training held in core hours.
