Cooling the Planet from Space: The Promise of Geoengineering

Join us for our Science Public Lecture in February, with Dr Chantal Cappelletti from the University of Nottingham’s Faculty of Engineering.

Space‑based geoengineering is emerging as one of the most intriguing—and challenging—ideas for addressing global warming.

This talk explores how orbital technologies such as planetary sunshades could gently reduce the amount of sunlight reaching Earth, complementing emissions cuts and adaptation efforts.

We will look at the scientific principles behind these concepts, the engineering hurdles of deploying large structures in space, and the ethical and governance questions that accompany any planetary‑scale intervention.

By examining both the promise and the limitations of space‑based climate strategies, the lecture invites the public to consider how innovation, responsibility, and international cooperation might shape the future of climate action.

No registration is required for this event. This lecture is part of our monthly Science Public Lecture series, and everyone is welcome to join.
