He is leading the JISC ePI study researching large-scale e-portfolio implementation in the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Upon completion of his degree, he pursued full-time, through an ESRC award, his research interest into the ways young children learn science. He gained his PhD in science education in 1984. He taught for 14 years as a science teacher in comprehensive schools in the UK and was an innovator in developing flexible learning and the use of Information Communications Technologies in science teaching and delivering INSET nationally. His final school post was as senior manager in charge of assessment in a comprehensive school where he introduced Records of Achievement. Current Research

These research interests are currently being pursued through e-portfolio projects and consultancy research for JISC and recent participation in the cohort 1V eportfolio international research consortium which was supported by two Centre for Integrative Learning funded projects that explore formal and informal approaches to e-portfolios.

His current research interests lie in;

· Learning design

o Designing for re-usable e-learning - this explores the nature of re-usability of e-learning through the two key concepts of personalisation and localisation.

o Collaborative working in learning design - this research sets out to develop an understanding of how notions of effective e-learning design develop in collaborative development teams of academics and learning technologists. It also explores the process of intercultural working and the participation of the intended users of the materials in the design process. Activity theory forms a framework for analysis in this work.

· Effective support for online learning

o The nature of effective training of online tutors - this research sets out to develop an understanding of the core set of skills required to be an effective online tutor in a wide range of higher education contexts, i.e. in different subject areas and different cultures. Activity theory forms the basis of a key tool for supporting tutors in developing an understanding of effective online support and is a key outcome of this work.

· Personalisation of e-learning

o Technological affordances that support personalization- this research and development has set out to work with academics and learning technologists to create tools and explore website design that support personalisation of the process of e-learning.

Future Research

The e-portfolio consortium research has been disseminated through a symposium led by Gordon Joyes and Angela Smallwood on mentoring in coaching at the 'Researching and Evaluating Personal Development Planning and e-Portfolios' conference at the Univeristy of Nottingham in April 2010. A paper is being prepared for journal submission.

Further work on threshold concepts and maturity modeling around e-portfoilio implementation is ongoing as part of the JISC funded eIP study researching large-scale e-portfolio implementations. Papers have been accepted for the e-portfolios conference in Australia and the Australian Association for Research in Education 2010. Plenaries presenting this work have been delivered recently at the Maharauk conference in London and the JISC RSC conference in Edinburgh.
