MA PhD (Nottingham) Areas of expertise - applied linguistics; discourse analysis; pragmatics; genre analysis; corpus linguistics. My programme of research over the last five years has been concerned mainly with the analysis and description of spoken discourse recorded in large computerised databases (corpora). I am particularly interested in the wider applications of empirical language-based research, especially in interdisciplinary contexts such as the language of health and the language of business communication. I am the director of the Centre for Research in Applied Linguistics (CRAL), Head of English Language and Applied Linguistics at Nottingham, and a member of the interdisciplinary Health Language Research Group (HLRG) at the University of Nottingham. I am also a member of the ESRC Virtual Research College.

Current Research

My research interests are in the areas of corpus linguistics and discourse analysis. I have been involved in a range of corpus development projects including the Cambridge and Nottingham Corpus of Discourse in English (CANCODE) and the Cambridge and Nottingham Business English Corpus (CANBEC). In terms of corpus analysis, I am particularly interested in the study of linguistic patterns in spoken corpora from an applied perspective. A specific focus of my research is on the description of functional or pragmatic units in discourse. As part of this research I am particularly concerned with the understanding of how context influences language in use and how this process can best be captured and described.

My most recent interest is in the multi-modal representation of spoken discourse through the development of video corpora and in this context I am currently involved in an ESRC funded project which explores new forms of digital records for e-social science. I have also started to explore how this research might be applicable to research on sign language, as well as in cross-cultural contexts. I am also currently principal investigator of an EPSRC funded project on Second Language Speech Fluency. This work explores the role of the placement of pauses in evaluating automatically extracted multi-word units in spoken learner English. I am also currently working on a number of projects relating to the Nottingham Health Communication Corpus. This work deals with the description of linguistic choices in specific health communication contexts with the aim of generating better models of communication between health professionals and patients.
