Welcome to three new Leverhulme and British Academy research fellows

Welcome to three new Leverhulme and British Academy research fellows:

  • Dr Hannah Scott (French), who joined us at the start of September as a British Academy Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2016-2019), working on French representations of the British in text and image, from the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 to the Entente Cordiale in 1904 
  • Dr Rosi Smith (SPLAS) who has just taken up a three-year Leverhulme fellowship to work on a project assessing the personal and community impact of the municipalisation of Cuban higher education that occurred in the first decade of the 21stcentury. 
  • Dr Wendy Asquith (American & Canadian Studies), starting next week, working on ‘Universal human rights: a century of intergovernmental display at world’s fairs’

Hannah, Rosi and Wendy join three Leverhulme Research Fellows already in the School

  • Rúben Leitão Serém (who joined SPLAS as a Leverhulme Research Fellow in 2014), working on Portugal and the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939) the intervention of the right-wing Portuguese Estado Novo dictatorship (1933-1974) in the Spanish Civil War
  • Dr Salvatore Garfi (SPLAS), who took up his Leverhulme felloswhip in September 2015, and whose project is an archaeological study of the conflict landscapes encountered by the volunteers of the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War 
  • Dr Olivia Walsh (French), on a Leverhulme Fellowship since September 2015, writing a comparative history of linguistic purism in France and Quebec from 1865-2000.
