Elizabeth has worked in primary and secondary schools for over twenty years, mostly with students with English as an Additional Language (EAL). Within her career she has struggled with the challenge of addressing the emotional needs of students in the role of a teacher and within the current education system. Elizabeth felt there was too much time punishing certain behaviours and little time exploring why. This influenced her decision to complete her MA Person-Centred Experiential Counselling and Psychotherapy Practice.
In 2018 Elizabeth was persuaded to go back into teaching to help to set up a new education provision for Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (UASC) and refugees aged 15-19. A joint project between the University of Nottingham and Nottingham City, it was established as a unique provision which recognised the need for an educational but also therapeutic environment for these students.
The freedom to design the curriculum and many other aspects of the provision, as well as establishing an in-house counselling provision, had a huge impact on both students and staff and became the subject of Elizabeth’s dissertation. It has been a steep learning curve working with such an extraordinary group of young people; exploring challenges, assumptions and prejudices not confronted before.
