Yesterday, the annual English Grammar Day conference took place at the British Library, St Pancras. The day involved talks from leading scholars and researchers on grammar and linguistics and was open to members of the public.
Ian Cushing, who will begin a PhD here with us in September, was one of the speakers and the final panel discussion session was chaired by Marcello Giovanelli along with Ian, Professor Bas Aarts (University College London), Professor Deborah Cameron (University of Oxford), Professor Simon Horobin (University of Oxford) and Professor Michael Rosen (University of London). It was a lively and stimulating debate about the role of grammar teaching in schools, policy and curriculum, attitudes to varieties of speaking and writing and the value of linguistics in the wider world.
