Finance, Risk and Banking

The Finance, Risk and Banking Division is a dynamic and vibrant group that provides a unique platform for research, teaching and learning in all three disciplines.

Our principle is to undertake rigorous quantitative research in empirically relevant issues in finance, risk and banking. Our novel and unifying perspective benefits students, researchers, and practitioners who have innate curiosities in financial markets and institutions.

Our staff are engaged in a wide range of contemporary research topics related to financial markets, institutions, banking, and principles of risk management. We explore a wide variety of relevant and interesting topics such as corporate governance mechanisms around the world, (in) efficiency of financial markets, and the fragility of banking systems, among many others.

In addition to these classic areas, group members are also involved in innovative fields like fintech, the influence of social networks in finance, and banking regulations in the post-crisis era.

Our researchers aim for the highest academic standards and have published in top rated journals including the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis and in specialised journals such as the Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Financial Intermediation, and Journal of Corporate Finance.

The Centre for Risk, Banking and Financial Services
Members of the division are active in the Business School's Centre for Risk, Banking and Financial Services (CRBFS) – a leading cross-disciplinary think-tank in the field of international banking and financial services.

Our research team includes leading international experts who are thought leaders with extensive experience. The main geographical activities of CRBFS are in Europe, China and ASEAN countries.

CRBFS serves as the launch-pad for facilitating knowledge transfer among scholars, policy-makers and practitioners in the area of international banking, finance and financial services. Our cross-disciplinary research includes the geography of financial services and the role of global financial centres.

CRBFS is involved in international research projects and consultancy activities including executive training courses for financial institutions (commercial and investment banks, corporates, consultancy firms) in the City of London and overseas. CRBFS organises regular conferences, seminars and workshops that are attended by leading experts in banking and finance.

The Centre's current research activities focus on:

  • financial innovation
  • bank performance
  • financial regulation
  • risk analyses
  • corporate finance and CSR
  • executive compensation
  • quantitative finance and insurance
Our most recent research and consultancy activities are focused on fintech, in particular on alternative finance and data analytics.
Our knowledge and expertise is communicated to students through carefully designed curricula in undergraduate, specialist MSc and up-to-date PhD programmes in the areas of finance, banking and risk.

Each of the Business School's three specialist masters programmes in finance, banking and risk are officially recognised by highly rated professional bodies like the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Chartered Banker (CBI), and Insurance Institutes.

Our expert teaching in quantitative fields is enhanced by a regular Financial Minds lecture series from visiting top practitioners. Our experts seamlessly blend these insights from direct experience into their courses and assessments, preparing students to use them in real life applications.
