The Nottingham Confucius Institute

China Mobility Programme

The China Mobility Programme is funded by Nottingham Confucius Institute (NCI) with the aim of enhancing the UoN student experience and increasing understanding of contemporary China.

To be eligible to apply to this programme, the following criteria must be met:

  • You must be a current, full-time Home/EU undergraduate student at the University of Nottingham
  • You must be based on the UK campus
  • You are not in your final year of study.

This is a competitive programme and is delivered through our partners in China. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to undertake a four-week cultural and educational exchange programme including opportunities to learn Mandarin and gain knowledge about the local business market whilst living with a Chinese host family (subject to availability) with breakfast and dinner provided – all for free!

The pilot programme was launched in summer 2018 with strong support from the Faculty of Social Sciences. Seven students from five schools successfully completed the programme  in four Chinese cities. Here is what they have to say about their experience:

It is something I will never forget! I made great friends and had some amazing experiences.”

It was a very eye-opening experience as we stayed in a foreign country for more than a month, and had the opportunity to experience the local culture and indulge in their uniqueness.”

I learned a lot from the host family about Chinese culture and values, whilst also gaining   an insight into their perceptions of the West too. I gained an insight into the logistics industry and learned about important concepts which I expect to use during interviews for related graduate programs.”

My Mandarin skills improved at a very fast pace. I learned around 300 new words on the 'Memorise' app and applied these to everyday situations at home and in the workplace. The improvement in my pronunciation through regular practice boosted my confidence and enjoyment in learning the language.”

“I'd describe my internship experience overall as brilliant! …I'd thoroughly recommend this experience to anybody who wants to experience the real China, and my only suggestion for improvement would be that I wanted to stay longer!!”
