Preparing for the end of term - Libraries

Wednesday, 09 June 2021
Whether you’re graduating or continuing your studies, here’s everything you need to know about library opening times and your library loans.

Your library loans

If your library loans have been recalled, you are graduating this summer or if you just no longer need the books, we’ve made it easier than ever to return items to our libraries:

  • Library book boxes - Return your books to the book boxes outside any of our libraries. The boxes at George Green, Hallward and James Cameron-Gifford libraries are open 24/7.
  • Freepost returns - If you live outside the local area, are eligible for Enhanced Library Support or are unable to visit our libraries, you can return your books with our free-of-charge postal returns service. This service is only available until mid-July 2021.

For those continuing with assessments and research over the summer or returning in the autumn, your library loans will continue to auto-renew every day as normal unless they are requested by someone else. If this happens, you’ll receive an email to let you know the item has been recalled.

If you are unable to visit the library and need to borrow a book, we are offering free postal loans until mid-July 2021 as well as our scanning service.

No fines have been charged for overdue items since December 2020. This will be reviewed again at the start of September. Return your books as soon as possible to avoid any future overdue fines.

Visiting our libraries

Extended opening hours in our libraries finish at the end of summer term, on Friday 18 June.

Our libraries will remain open throughout the summer but with vacation opening hours. Check the latest opening times on the Libraries website.

Our library services will continue throughout the summer including browsing, borrowing and access to bookable individual study space.

Whilst some national restrictions have been lifted, Covid-19 safety measures are still in place in our libraries to help keep the university community safe. Please follow the safety measures at all times.

The nationwide SCONUL Access scheme which allows for access to other libraries is currently suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Check the SCONUL Access scheme website for the latest updates.

Help and support

Library staff are available to answer your questions in the run up to the end of term, and throughout the summer. Get in touch by contacting the Library Helpline by email, phone or Live Chat.

The regular Ask Libraries sessions on Microsoft Teams will continue throughout the summer. Drop-in for help with getting the most out of using NUsearch to find, borrow and request resources.
