Course information
The course will cover three components:
Tropical Communicable Disease
The major component of the module will cover tropical communicable diseases. The pathophysiology and treatment for the most common infectious tropical diseases such as malaria, dengue, leprosy, water-borne cholera and re-emerging tuberculosis (TB), most of which have been identified by UN as epidemics which need to be ended by 2030, under the health and well-being goal in UN’s global goals for a sustainable development agenda. Teaching will be in form of lectures and tropical laboratory practice.
Wildlife in the Tropics
The second component is Wildlife in Tropics. This will cover elephant, snake, and bats life in tropics and interaction with human, study of the animals, risk of diseases, and clinical management of diseases related to snakes and bats. The teaching will be delivered in in-campus, out-campus Lectures, demonstration sessions and field visit are embedded in the module to provide students real life experience.
Life of Minorities
The third component is about life of minorities in tropics. This will include the challenges of indigenous people and refugees in tropics related to identity, education, health, the existing knowledge about traditional medicine (Chinese, Malay and Ayurvedic medicine) and understanding the botanical life of tropics. This part will include lectures, panel discussion with experts, and visits to relevant places.
Students who complete the summer school and successfully progress into Year 3 will complete the assessment in the autumn semester.
About

The University of Nottingham campus is located on a 125 acre site, near the town of Semenyih and 45-60 minutes by taxi from Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.
It costs approximately £10-12 for a taxi between the campus and Kuala Lumpur, and approximately £12 for a taxi between the campus and Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
The University provides free shuttle buses from the campus to a local Tescos in Semenyih, KLTC near the centre of Kuala Lumpur, IOI City Mall in Putrajya, and Kajang KTM (train station) which has regular trains to Kuala Lumpur.
Campus facilities
The campus was built in 2000 and offers state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities. There is a bookshop, cafés, a multi-level library, amphitheatre, an electronic store, 'Nott-A-Shop', selling academic and educational materials and two convenience stores as well as the Students' Association building.

The campus has a range of food and beverage outlets including Chinese, Western, Arabic, Thai and Vegetarian cuisines, in addition to Subway and Secret Recipe. It is also possible to receive deliveries from local restaurants, including Western options such as Dominos, McDonalds and Pizza Hut. The campus hosts food trucks and a bazaar market on a weekly basis.
The Sports Complex provides sports facilities free of charge. Amenities include an outdoor swimming pool, multipurpose courts, martial arts room, fields and gymnasium. There is also a range of academic, cultural, religious, sport and special interest clubs and societies available to join.

In 2024, the following field trips were organised to complement the three themes of the module:

Traditional Chinese Medicine hospital
To discuss the benefits of Traditional and Western practice in-patient rehabilitation. How do stroke patients benefit from a combined Western and traditional approach?

Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM)
These botanical gardens house many plants used for medicinal purposes. Students discovered how they are integrated into a variety or practices including drug therapy and nutritional impact.

Orang Asli Hospital, Gombak
Here students were able to interact with medical and healthcare practitioners who support the indigenous communities in Malaysia. Discussions centred around vaccinating travelling communities, access to urgent care and education.
Travel opportunities
Malaysia is situated in the heart of Southeast Asia, offering unparalleled travel opportunities to neighbouring countries, including Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore and Indonesia. Kuala Lumpur, one of SE Asia’s leading centres, is a lively and cosmopolitan city of 1.4 million people. The spectacular Twin Towers dominate the skyline, above beautiful parks and fountains. The prestigious Golden Triangle district is famed for its nightlife, offering exceptional bars, clubs and cafes. Kuala Lumpur is also well known for its wide range of eating opportunities, including numerous hawker and noodle stalls, offering tasty and inexpensive meals.
Top attractions: Petronas Twin Towers, Batu Caves, KLCC Park, Jalan Alor, Penang Hill, Langkawi Sky Bridge, Cenang Beach.
Climate
The average high temperature in July is 30°C with average low temperatures of 23ºC. Days are generally sunny and warm with high humidity; nights are usually cool and comfortable.
Finance
Tuition fees: All students nominated to UNM will have their tuition fees covered by the UK Campus.
Means-tested bursaries
Means-tested travel bursaries are available to students classed as Home students for fees purposes:
Awards of £700 and partial awards of £200 are available. Students from low-income households who meet the Global Opportunities team's widening participation eligibility criteria will be prioritised. Please note a limited number of awards are available.
Students in receipt of the University Core Bursary will be prioritised for the full award of £700.
