About

The University of Nottingham Malaysia, opened in 2000, was the first ever branch campus of a UK University. It was a fundamental part of Nottingham’s vision to be a truly global university providing the same quality of education as the UK campus in an Asian setting.

The University of Nottingham campus is located on a 125 acre site, near the town of Semenyih and 45-60 minutes by taxi from Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.

It costs approximately £10-12 for a taxi between the campus and Kuala Lumpur, and approximately £12 for a taxi between the campus and Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

The University provides free shuttle buses from the campus to a local Tescos in Semenyih, KLTC near the centre of Kuala Lumpur, IOI City Mall in Putrajya, and Kajang KTM (train station) which has regular trains to Kuala Lumpur.

Campus facilities

The campus was built in 2000 and offers state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities. There is a bookshop, cafés, a multi-level library, amphitheatre, an electronic store, 'Nott-A-Shop', selling academic and educational materials and two convenience stores as well as the Students' Association building.

The campus has a range of food and beverage outlets including Chinese, Western, Arabic, Thai and Vegetarian cuisines, in addition to Subway and Secret Recipe. The campus hosts food trucks and a bazaar market on a weekly basis.

The Sports Complex provides sports facilities free of charge. Amenities include an outdoor swimming pool, multipurpose courts, martial arts room, fields and gymnasium. There is also a range of academic, cultural, religious, sport and special interest clubs and societies available to join.

The historical site of Malacca

Spend a night in a shared room, in this beautiful city with rich tradition and culture. Jonker Street and China Town is known for its unique antique shops and popular night market.

Malaysia is situated in the heart of Southeast Asia, offering unparalleled travel opportunities to neighbouring countries, including Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore and Indonesia. Kuala Lumpur, one of SE Asia’s leading centres, is a lively and cosmopolitan city of 1.4 million people. The spectacular Twin Towers dominate the skyline, above beautiful parks and fountains. The prestigious Golden Triangle district is famed for its nightlife, offering exceptional bars, clubs and cafes. Kuala Lumpur is also well known for its wide range of eating opportunities, including numerous hawker and noodle stalls, offering tasty and inexpensive meals.

Top attractions: Petronas Twin Towers, Batu Caves, KLCC Park, Jalan Alor, Penang Hill, Langkawi Sky Bridge, Cenang Beach.

Climate

The average high temperature in July is 30°C with average low temperatures of 23ºC. Days are generally sunny and warm with high humidity; nights are usually cool and comfortable.

Things to do

Shanghai, Hu for short, is the largest city in China and in terms of population, the largest city in the world. It is renowned international metropolis drawing more and more attention from all over the world. Situated on the estuary of Yangtze River, it serves as the most influential economic, financial, international trade, cultural, science and techonology centre in East China.

In addition to its modernisation, the city's multicultural flare endows it with a unique glamour. New skyscapers and old Shikumen together draw the skyline of the city. Western customs and Chinese traditions form Shanghai's culture.

The university is comprised of four campuses and has over 30,000 full-time students, including 3,000 international students. A wide variety of clubs have been created by students, these include dance, theatre, ball sports and politics.

Travel opportunities

Shanghai is the ideal location to start your travels around China with an excellent rail network and plenty of internal flights.

China's capital city Beijing is a two hour flight from Shanghai. Beijing has many places of historic and architectural interest; the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the world renowned Great Wall. You can also visit the super-modern Olympic Village, with the Bird’s Nest Stadium and Water Cube.

Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province, is one of the more modern and prosperous cities in China. It sits at the southern end of the Grand Canal and is one of China's seven ancient national capitals. The Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an are easily accessible by train or flight and Hong Kong is only a night train or short flight away.

Top attractions: Jade Buddha Temple, Shanghai Tower, Yuyuan Gardens & Bazaar, The Bund (Wai Tan), Old Town (Nanshi).

Climate

Shanghai has a humid subtropical climate with all four seasons, featuring particularly hot humid summers and cold winters. The summer in Shanghai is hot and humid with temperatures regularly above 30°C and occasional sudden downpours and thunderstorms.

Accommodation

On campus self-catered accommodation is in the Handan Campus International Students Dormitory. This offers single and shared rooms with air conditioning and internet access. Single rooms cost 150 RMB per person, per day and double rooms cost 100 RMB per person, per day. There is a shared kitchen and laundry room on every floor. Electricity is included but bedding is not provided and students need to top-up their water card to use hot water and shower facilities.

Private, off-campus accommodation options are also available, however please be aware these costs may be higher than the International Students Dormitory.

PolyU Enrichment Activities

Hong Kong is considered by many to be a shopping and food heaven in the heart of Asia. It has an amazing public transport network and the vibrant city offers a fantastic social experience, with attractions and activities including mountain hiking, watersports, music and art exhibitions, and 3am dim sum.

Travel opportunities

There are many opportunities to travel within the different regions of Hong Kong, including experiencing vibrant dining, shopping and nightlife area in Kowloon, chilling out on idyllic beaches on the southern side of the island, visiting the Ma Wan Park Noah's Ark in the New Territories or seeing the giant Buddha and the Ngong Ping cable car in the Outlying Islands.

Hong Kong is situated in the heart of Southeast Asia and offers travel opportunities including Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. It takes 2½ hours to fly to Shanghai and 3½ hours to Beijing, or you can visit Shenzhen by train or bus.

Top attractions: Tian Tan Buddha, Peak Tower, Ocean Park Theme Park, Apliu Street Market and Tsim Sha Tsui East Promenade skyline viewpoint.

Climate

Hong Kong weather is famous for it's unpredictability. The city has four distinct seasons, summer takes place in June and August; average termperatures are 28ºC with high humidity.

PolyU International Summer School Scholarship

PolyU is offering one scholarships of $8,000 HKD (£824 approx.) to a nominated University of Nottingham in summer 2025. The student will be selected for the scholarship at the time of nomination by the University of Nottingham, based on widening participation criteria and International Summer Schools application score.

Students nominated for the scholarship must also meet the following criteria, set by HK PolyU

  • Enrol in one subject at PolyU International Summer School 2025;
  • Achieve at least 80% attendance in the enrolled subject;
  • Have no outstanding fines, loans or debts with PolyU Departments & Offices;
  • Comply with HK PolyU policies/regulations, immigration regulations and Hong Kong laws

The scholarship will be issued by cheque, which the successful student can collect at the end of the summer school, prior to departure.

Things to do

Seoul is a city of 10.5 million people, and has been the Korean capital for 600 years. Popular tourist spots include the ancient palaces and royal shrines of the Joseon Dynasty, the historic Namhansan Mountain Fortress, the Han River which runs to North Korea, and the Seoul World Cup and Olympic Stadia.

Top attractions: Bukchon Village, Gyeongbok Palace, Shinsegae Department Store, Bugaksan mountain trails, N Seoul Tower, Itaewon district and Namdaemun Market.

Seoul is within comfortable flying distance of Japan and China, with Tokyo, Beijing and Shanghai all less than three hours flight away. Tropical Medicine and Beyond Summer School

University of Nottingham Malaysia, Semenyih, Malaysia

  • Eligibility: Only available to 2nd year students studying health-related degrees in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and Pharmacy

Course information

The course will cover three components:

Tropical Communicable Disease

The major component of the module will cover tropical communicable diseases. The pathophysiology and treatment for the most common infectious tropical diseases such as malaria, dengue, leprosy, water-borne cholera and re-emerging tuberculosis (TB), most of which have been identified by UN as epidemics which need to be ended by 2030, under the health and well-being goal in UN’s global goals for a sustainable development agenda. Teaching will be in form of lectures and tropical laboratory practice.

Wildlife in the Tropics

The second component is Wildlife in Tropics. This will cover elephant, snake, and bats life in tropics and interaction with human, study of the animals, risk of diseases, and clinical management of diseases related to snakes and bats. The teaching will be delivered in in-campus, out-campus Lectures, demonstration sessions and field visit are embedded in the module to provide students real life experience.

Life of Minorities

The third component is about life of minorities in tropics. This will include the challenges of indigenous people and refugees in tropics related to identity, education, health, the existing knowledge about traditional medicine (Chinese, Malay and Ayurvedic medicine) and understanding the botanical life of tropics. This part will include lectures, panel discussion with experts, and visits to relevant places. 

Students who complete the summer school and successfully progress into Year 3 will complete the assessment in the autumn semester.

In 2024, the following field trips were organised to complement the three themes of the module:

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine hospital
    To discuss the benefits of Traditional and Western practice in-patient rehabilitation. How do stroke patients benefit from a combined Western and traditional approach?
  • Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM)
    These botanical gardens house many plants used for medicinal purposes. Students discovered how they are integrated into a variety or practices including drug therapy and nutritional impact.
  • Orang Asli Hospital, Gombak
    Here students were able to interact with medical and healthcare practitioners who support the indigenous communities in Malaysia. Discussions centred around vaccinating travelling communities, access to urgent care and education.

FASStrack Asia: The Summer School

  • Academic disciplines: Students can select one course from the subject areas of: communications and new media; economics,  global studies, history, Japanese studies, psychology, sociology and Southeast Asian studies.

Things to do

NUS is one of three of the largest universities in Singapore. Founded in 1905, it is in fact the oldest institute for higher learning in Singapore, and is known worldwide as being a reputable University. Singapore is a small territory, and metered taxis are available all around. The city is always bussling with people, and English is spoken by the majority of the population.

The university is comprised of three campuses; Kent Ridge, Bukit Timah and Outram. There are over 28,000 undergraduate and 10,000 postgraduate students studying at the university.

Kent Ridge, the main campus, spans 150 hectares, and is a bustling hub of student life. It also includes sports, research and administration facilities.

There are a range of social activities organised as part of the summer programme, including two social events at the weekends; cultural activities for summer 2025 are to be confirmed. Travel opportunities

Singapore is a small tropical island with over 63 surrounding islets. It offers world class shopping centres, entertainment and excellent nightlife in the popular Clarke Quay bar and restaurant area. Other highlights are the luxurious colonial-style Raffles Hotel which has a number of restaurants and bars open to non-guests and the award winning Singapore Zoo which has the largest population of captive orangutans in the world! All of these are within easy reach of the university as there is an efficient transportation network of taxis, buses and an underground MRT rail system, which operates from 6am to midnight.

Singapore is located in the heart of Southeast Asia and is surrounded by many countries which you may wish to travel to. Whether you would like to relax on a beach in the Philippines, explore the ancient temples of Angkor Wat (Siem Reap, Cambodia), or go snorkelling in Indonesia, there is something for everyone.

Top Attractions: NUS Centre for Arts, Little India markets, Singapore Sling from Raffles Hotel, Chinatown, Marina Bay Sands and the National Museum of Singapore

Climate

Singapore is a Southeast Asian country, with a tropical climate. Temperatures of 33ºC are common. Although the country has mainly sunshine, there can be tropical seasons with frequent downpours of heavy rain.

Accommodation

You will stay on-campus at one of the residential colleges in single occupancy rooms within halls. Each air-conditioned room comes furnished with bedding, furniture and internet access. There is also a weekly houskeeping service with linen change. In addition, each residential college has shared facilities within the building such as kitchenettes and laundry rooms. The residential colleges are also located within close proximity to FASS classrooms, UTown, sports facilities and dining amenities.

    • Chinese Cinema and ARRI Certification offers students the opportunity to explore Chinese cinema and become ARRI certified camera system operators
    • Doing Business in China introduces and explains the relevant knowledge and methods for developing your understanding of how business is done in China. The programme involves interactive lectures, case studies, company visits and field trips.

About University of Nottingham Ningbo China

The campus is located in Ningbo, a historic city on China's eastern coast close to Shanghai. The 140-acre Ningbo campus was opened to students in 2004. Like the Malaysia Campus, Ningbo Campus builds on the attributes of University Park in the UK and includes a lake and its own version of Nottingham's famous Trent Building. The campus provides purpose-built facilities for nearly 8,000 students, including:

  • on-site residential facilities for all students and staff
  • restaurants and shops
  • a dedicated sports complex
  • state-of-the-art teaching, research and student services buildings

The new campus is situated on the Ningbo Higher Education Park, which also has excellent complementary facilities, including a new Municipal Library and Sports Stadium.

Things to do

As well as interactive lectures, previous summer schools have offered company visits and field trips, including two company visits, a field trip to a rural area to understand the rural economy, a two-day trip to Hangzhou and a day of Chinese cultural activities.

Travel opportunities

Shanghai is 30 minutes by plane or a two-hour bus journey via the 36km Hangzhou Bay Bridge. Shanghai is a must-see: the largest city in China is a multicultural metropolis with an amazing mix of ancient and hi-tech Western civilisation.

China's capital city Beijing is only a two-hour flight from Ningbo. Beijing has many places of historic interest and architectural beauty including the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the world renowned Great Wall. In addition you can visit the supermodern Olympic Village, with the Bird’s Nest Stadium and Water Cube.

Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province, is one of the more modern and prosperous cities in China. It sits at the southern end of the Grand Canal and is one of China's seven ancient national capitals.

Climate

Ningbo is subject to a sub-tropical monsoon climate, with four clear seasons. The summer is warm and wet, with temperatures up to 28°C. Rainfall is highest during the monsoon season June-September. In winter temperatures drop to an average of 4°C. In September, typhoons are frequent.

About Yonsei

Yonsei founded in 1885 is one of South Korea’s SKY universities, which are the three most prestigious universities in South Korea. Seoul is a city of 10.5 million people, and has been the Korean capital for 600 years. Top attractions: Bukchon Village, Gyeongbok Palace, Shinsegae Department Store, Bugaksan mountain trails, N Seoul Tower, Itaewon district and Namdaemun Market.

Yonsei offers a range of extra-curricular activities during the summer school, all at an additional cost except for the campus tour.

Travel opportunities

Yonsei University is accessible by airport Limousine bus transfer or taxi from Incheon International Airport.

Seoul is within comfortable flying distance of Japan and China, with Tokyo, Beijing and Shanghai all less than three hours flight away. The Haerang Rail Cruise offers an unrivalled tour through the whole country, while South Korea also boasts a number of beautiful mountain ranges. The lakeside city of Chuncheon, a popular tourist destination, is also within travelling distance.

Accommodation

Double rooms are available in International House (female only), single and double rooms are available in SK Global House. Both accommodation halls house up to 500 students in double rooms and are conveniently located within 3 minutes walking distance from the New Millennium Hall, where many of YISS classes take place. Each single-sex room is equipped with an air conditioner and LAN connection for internet access.

The dormitory has shared microwaves and refrigerators, a study room, recreation room, lecture room, computer room and laundry facilities (washing machines, dryers and irons). There is a 24-hour front desk to ensure residents’ comfort and convenience. There is no meal plan at the dormitory.
