The event is a practitioner/academic collaboration relating to Enliven project, and particularly their work with a third sector organisation working with local young people and with Computer Science on applying data in a social science setting.   

Tackling youth unemployment - the need to employ a new approach?

Whilst the issue of long term employment and its negative impact on the economy and society is well documented it is evident that the precise nature of the interventions required to support young people disadvantaged in the labour market are still emerging. This is a problematic situation for commissioners, policy makers and social investors wanting to effect positive change to ensure young people can make a sustainable transition from education to employment.

To help contribute to the body of evidence to inform ‘what works’ Groundwork Greater Nottingham and University of Nottingham have been working in partnership to evaluate a five year youth employment project* specifically established to support innovation in the provision of services for young people disadvantaged from the labour market.

Working to analyse project data the collaborative evaluation project has identified transferable trends and intelligence to help organisations and individuals consider how they might ‘employ’ new approaches to support young people furthest from the labour market to secure employment.

This event has been designed to illustrate the following themes emanating from the evaluation:

• Key service model principles
• Behavioural insights and the need to understand the life journey of young people
• The concept and application of distance from labour market
• The challenge of value for money and payment by results
• Evolving employer engagement
• The need for robust evaluation of employment programmes to inform a progressive legacy within the employability sector.
