Personal Relationships at Work

At our University, the connections we build with one another, whether as colleagues, staff, or with students, play a vital role in shaping a positive and welcoming culture. Personal relationships are a natural and important part of life, and we value the trust and respect that come from these connections. At the same time, we recognise that without clear boundaries, these relationships can sometimes create challenges, especially if they impact decision-making or professional integrity.

To support everyone in navigating these situations with confidence and care, we have a Personal Relationships Policy designed with your well-being and our shared values in mind. This policy reflects our commitment to creating a safe and respectful environment where everyone can thrive.

We encourage all staff to read the Personal Relationships Policy carefully to understand how it supports a fair and respectful workplace for everyone.

Key Policy Highlights

Personal relationships should always coexist with professionalism, fairness, and respect to maintain a positive environment.

  • Staff and Student intimate relationships are not permitted if the staff member has direct responsibility for the student (see Sections 3 and 4.1).
  • Such relationships are strongly discouraged even without direct responsibility, to uphold the integrity of our community.
  • Staff and Staff relationships are permitted, but conflicts of interest need to be managed.
  • Disclosure is required when there are real or potential conflicts of interest.
