Biography

Prior to joining the University of Nottingham, I completed my BA in Mathematics and Philosophy, and MA in Philosophy at Durham University. I began my PhD here in 2021 exploring the moral, social, and political dimensions of microaggressions, supervised by Dr Koshka Duff and Professor Chris Woodard.

Current Research

Microaggressions are broadly understood to be verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights which communicate negative messages towards marginalised individuals. Although seemingly subtle and innocuous, when microaggressions are frequently experienced by marginalised people, they can cause a range of significant harms that help sustain structures of oppression.

My PhD research explores the moral, social, and political dimensions of microaggressions, and addresses 4 main research questions:

  1. How should we understand and apply the term "microaggression"?
  2. In what ways do microaggressions contribute to structures of oppression?
  3. To what extent are individuals responsible for committing microaggressions?
  4. How should we respond when a microaggression has occurred?
