Our sad loss of Penelope Mackie

It is with great sadness that the Department of Philosophy announces that our friend and colleague Penelope Mackie died on Monday 5th December, following a period of illness.

Penelope was a long-standing member of the Nottingham philosophy department, and taught generations of students both here and at the universities of Birmingham, Oxford, Virginia Commonwealth, and Maryland. She was a dedicated teacher and supervisor, and was Head of our Department from 2007 to 2010.

She was known internationally for her influential research in metaphysics, particularly her work on free will, modal metaphysics, causation, and issues surrounding identity and persistence.

Our thoughts are with Penelope's friends and family at this deeply sad time.
