Right to work check

Please use this page if you have been offered a fixed term or permanent role at the university and need a right to work check. If you are unsure, please contact your hiring manager or email recruitment@nottingham.ac.uk this will be picked up by a member of the recruitment team.

Please note that a right to work check using digital verification has two steps:

  1. Online document verification, through provider Yoti
  2. Face-to document verification, also known as an imposter check, in person or video call on your first day.

Next steps

  • As part of the offer you will receive your offer confirmation, contract and information regarding the right to work check
  • Your right to work check will be completed by a member of the recruitment team
  • Your manager will arrange a face-to-document check prior to your start date. (also known as an imposter check) with you, via video call. After all checks are completed, recruitment processes will continue and you will be issued with your contract
  • You will get access to a UniCore account to enter your bank details and view payslips
  • The manager will let the recruiting team know once your face-to-document  check is complete

More information about right to work checks

What will my right to work check involve?

I am a UK/Irish national with a current passport

You will be able to complete your check using our digital identify verification provider, Yoti. This will involve uploading a picture of your passport and taking a selfie. Your hiring manager will complete a ‘face to document check’ (also known as an imposter check) prior to or on your first day. Find out more about using Identity Verification Technology provider, Yoti for your right to work check.

I am a UK/Irish national without a current passport (no passport or expired passport)

If you don’t have a current passport, or your passport is expired, you will need to provide approved documentation in an in-person check with your manager. Please speak with your hiring manager directly if you need an in-person check. This must be completed before you can start working. To ensure that you can provide the correct documents please see our manual check guidance page.

What if I do not want to use a digital provider for my UK/Irish national right to work check?

If you do not want to use a digital provider for your right to work check, you will be able to complete this in person with your hiring manager. This must be completed ahead of your start date, in person with your original documents. Please speak with your hiring manager directly if you need an in-person check. To ensure that you can provide the correct documents please see our manual check guidance page.

I have a ‘share code’ to prove my right to work using the Home Office right to work check service

To prove your right to work, please generate a ‘share code’ using the Home Office service: https://www.gov.uk/prove-right-to-work.

You cannot complete this check through our digital ID provider, Yoti, at this stage. Instead, please send your hiring manager:

  • Your share code
  • Your date of birth
  • A copy of your passport

Your hiring manager will then carry out an imposter check (in person or via video call) and confirm to the HR Staff Immigration Team (staff-immigration@nottingham.ac.uk) once your documents are verified. The HR Immigration team will then share these with the Recruitment team so your application can proceed.

I do not currently have a UK visa status and will need a visa to work in the UK

Please notify the recruitment team, by email: recruitment@nottingham.ac.uk, to advice that you require a work visa. They will inform the HR Staff Immigration team, who will contact you with the next steps for your visa application.

Please see our privacy notice which applies to candidates.
