Description

STIAS Building-520
Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS), South Africa

Mission

Uncovering the foundational principles that govern non-equilibrium systems and developing new methods for their theoretical description and experimental characterization have been long-standing quests of physical research. The last decade has witnessed substantial progress in this direction on both the classical and the quantum side. The rapid emergence of stochastic and quantum thermodynamics, wide-ranging theoretical advances in statistical, many-body and mesoscopic physics and a whole breath of new experimental techniques to manipulate biological, solid-state, opto-mechanical and cold-atom systems are only some hallmarks of this development. The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers from these and related areas with the overall objective to find new avenues towards bridging the long-existing divide between quantum and classical concepts in non-equilibrium physics. Besides the scheduled 45-min talks, the program leaves ample time for discussions and exchange.
