N Horton Smith and Aspire Travel Scholarship

For students with an interest and ability in languages, music or fine arts who will be studying abroad

The N Horton Smith and Aspire Travel Scholarship aims to help students fund their studies abroad as part of their undergraduate degree. Interest and ability in languages, music and fine arts will be considered as part of this scholarship. 

The Scholarship was established in 1987 in memory of N Horton Smith, who joined the university in 1946 as assistant Lecturer in German and retired in 1979 as Professor of German.

If you are chosen for this award, you will receive a lump sum award before you leave for your time studying abroad. If you're chosen for the award, you won't have to pay it back after you graduate unless you don't travel.

Applications for the 2023/24 scholarship fund your travels in the following academic year (2024/25) are now open.

Eligibility criteria explained

To be eligible for the 2023/24 Oblath International Enrichment Scholarship, you must:

  • Be registered on a first full-time undergraduate degree at the University of Nottingham (UK Campus)
  • Not be receiving external sponsorship for your course e.g. from industry/employers (University bursaries and Government grants do not affect your eligibility)

The following terms and conditions also apply:

  • The Scholarship shall be open to all undergraduates of the university to assist with travel abroad related to their studies
  • Interest and ability in languages, music or fine art will be taken into account
  • The Scholarship shall be awarded annually, but no more than once to the same person
  • No award will be made unless applications of sufficient merit are received

Award value: £500

If the recipient of the award does not study abroad for any reason, it is the student's responsibility to make the Funding and Financial Support Team aware and repay the funds.
