Biography of Sir Gervase Clifton, 4th Baronet (d 1731)

Gervase was the eldest son of Robert Clifton of Blyth, and his wife Sarah, née Parkhurst. Robert Clifton was the eldest son of Gervase Clifton, 1st Baronet, by his sixth marriage to Jane, daughter of Anthony Eyre of Rampton.

Gervase succeeded his cousin Sir William Clifton, 3rd Baronet, to the Clifton estates and the baronetcy in 1686. He was a Roman Catholic, and appears in the county records for numerous failures to take oaths. He was imprisoned in 1715 at the height of the perceived Jacobite threat, along with his son Robert.

Family

He married Anne, daughter of Dudley Bagnall of Newry, Ireland, and had:

  • Robert, later 5th Baronet
  • William, m Mrs Wharton. No issue
  • Alfred, army officer
  • Dudley
  • George, m Anne, daughter of Robert Sacheverell, and had issue
  • 10 other sons who died unmarried

His widow Anne married 2ndly, in 1734, William Blackburne of Ongar, Essex.

Archive Collections

  • Title deeds, settlements, estate and legal papers relating to Sir Gervase Clifton's ownership of his estates are part of the Clifton collection held in Manuscripts and Special Collections at the University of Nottingham
