Research Topic:
"Dismantling a Culture of Marketization? Functions and effects of discourses of students in a context of tuition fees removal in a highly marketized society"

Research Details:
The effects of the changes in Higher Education (HE) by becoming a part-public and an increasingly market-driven sector continues to be a subject of much debate. The purpose of this research is to critically investigate the function and effects of discourses of the student in the context of 'free' higher education in a marketized society when tuition fees in HE are partially removed by a policy change; and by doing so, if this change in policy will eventually encourage a dismantling of a culture of marketization in HE. This research seeks then to explore potential alternative orientations of students in HE (compared to the well-documented orientation of the student as consumer). The overarching RQ for this thesis is What are the discourses surrounding a public policy reform of partial removal of tuition fees? The overarching research question has been deconstructed in three sub questions: 1) What role does the news media play in reframing (recontextualizing) the public policy of "Gratuidad" (Free education in Chile)? 2)How are students discursively represented in news coverage of the policy reform? 3) What are the discourses of university students regarding their higher education experience? To address the aim and objectives of this study, this research has engaged in a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) informed by Fairclough's TODA framework (1992, 1993, 2003) of a collection of newspaper articles and set of students' discourses collected from in depth interviews.
