Public Talk - The Law Governing all Laws: Daoism and Happiness

Description
Nottingham Confucius Institute was delighted to host the second session in the NCI Chinese Philosophy Talk Series on Daoism on 22 April. The Teams talk was again delivered by Manuel Parreno, a China expert who studied Political Science and Chinese language in the US before taking a three-year Masters degree in Chinese Philosophy in China after developing a passion for Daoism.

Public Talk: Managing stress amidst the Pandemic: a Daoist Perspective

Description
The first of the NCI Chinese Philosophy Talk Series on Daoism took place on Teams on 11 March. The talk was chaired by Jason Feehily, Director of Knowledge Exchange Asia on behalf of the University and NCI and delivered by Manuel Parreno, a China expert who studied Political Science and Chinese language in the US and subsequently obtained a three-year Masters degree in Chinese Philosophy in China after developing a passion for Daoism.

NCI Support Local School Chinese New Year Gala

The Nottingham Confucius Institute were delighted to support Nottingham Chinese School's Chinese New Year Gala, which took place on Saturday 27 February. The 90-minute online event was attended by over 300 pupils and their families.

NCI Support UoN Student Societies Event to Promote Cross Culture Communication and Understanding

Description
Over 30 Nottingham University students took part in the Chinese New Year Language Partner Challenge event, jointly organised by two UoN student societies: CSSA (Chinese Scholars and Students Association) and Contemporary China with support from Nottingham Confucius Institute. The online event took place via Teams on Saturday 27 Feb.

Chinese New Year Digital Celebrations 2021

Specially curated by Lakeside Arts in partnership with Nottingham Confucius Institute, a pre-recorded gala programme - "Chinese New Year Digital Celebrations 2021" was made available online to help UoN staff, students and local residents celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Ox between 11-26 February.

Mandarin Corner: Traditional Chinese Musical Instruments

Description
On the evening of Thursday December 4 we were delighted to be joined by professional musician Mandy Zhang for our final online Mandarin Corner event of the Autumn term. Mandy has 25 years' experience of playing the pipa ('Chinese lute') and is recognised by the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing as a qualified pipa teacher.

NCI holds 12th "China and Me" Mandarin Speech Contest on ZOOM

Description
On 20th November six shortlisted candidates (one staff member and five students, each from different schools across the University) had their "China and Me" Speech Contest videos broadcast live for assessment by a panel of judges at our ZOOM event. Established in 2009 by Nottingham Confucius Institute (NCI), the "China and Me" Speech Contest is an annual event that offers Mandarin learners an opportunity to test and showcase their language proficiency. Winners of the contest are be selected and trained to attend the following year's Chinese Bridge Competition, representing the University of Nottingham.

Mandarin Corner: Online Spoken Chinese Class

On November 5, NCI teachers and students gathered once again for our "Online Spoken Chinese Class", our third Mandarin Corner event of the semester. Delivered in the evening via Zoom, the event offered students of intermediate level an insight into authentic colloquial expressions used by Chinese people on a day-to-day basis
