Nottingham Confucius Institute (NCI) was pleased to host two academic talks introducing fascinating aspects of Chinese culture during this term’s Mandarin Corner events, which took place at the Si Yuan Centre on the University Jubilee Campus.

The first talk entitled "Walking with Literature: 111 Years of Chinese Drama History", was delivered by NCI China Director Prof Li Nan on 18th Oct. Prof Li, Professor of Chinese Literature from Fudan University, brought to life the origin, development and current status of Chinese drama to over 20 UoN students, staff and local residents. During the one and a half hour session, the participants also enjoyed listening to some classic Chinese drama highlights including "Tea House" and "Thunderstorm".

At the Mandarin Corner on 25th Oct, Dr Wang from UoN Dept of Architecture and Built Environment was invited to give a talk on Ancient Chinese Architecture. Many of the attendees found the talk and demonstration informative and intriguing, especially when Dr Wang showed them how to build a bucket arch (‘Dougong’ in Chinese). Bucket arches are a system of brackets unique to traditional Chinese architecture, thanks to which the the Forbidden City stands enduringly graceful with its upturned eaves and solid construction.

A few more talks have been scheduled to take place over November and December including “Poetry in Classical Chinese Gardens” by Dr Wang Qi on 8th November (18:30-20:00) in A18 Si Yuan Centre and “Kangurus and Gavagais: Rethinking Language, and Ethnocentrism through Villeneuve's Arrival” by Prof Carlos Rojas of Duke University on 22 November (17:00-18:30) in A39 Sir Clive Granger Building.
