On 9 July, Nottingham Confucius Institute held its annual teacher training programme at Si Yuan Centre. The event ran for the whole day and attracted 30 people, including teachers and students from local primary and secondary schools, Nottingham Confucius Institute and Nottingham’s School of Education.

The day began with a workshop on “Classroom Manager Techniques” by Mrs Helen Feehily, a local secondary school teacher and department head. Drawing upon over 20 years of work experience, Helen demonstrated effective techniques on how to engage students and shared various practical tips on how to manage students’ behaviour in the classroom. The workshop was followed with a keynote speech by Ms Jingjing Ruan, who has taught Mandarin to students from years 7 to 11 as part of the mainstream curriculum at the Long Eaton School for the past four years. Jingjing is also a final year PhD student studying Mandarin teaching at Nottingham’s School of Education (expected to graduate in December). During her presentation titled “Chinese language teaching in the UK: practices and ideas”, Jingjing presented current teaching methodologies and good practice, using the Long Eaton School as an example.

In the afternoon, 14 participants delivered presentations on various topics covering how to teach Chinese characters, using apps to facilitate teaching, popular classroom activities and recent changes to the GCSE Mandarin curriculum. Presentations on each group of topics were followed by a short Q and A session.

After all the presentations and discussions ended, participants were invited to vote for their three favourite presentations. Many congratulations to the winners, all of whom happened to be NCI teachers - Mr Hao Wu, Miss Xi Chen, and Mr Zhen Zhang, who teaches at the Confucius Classroom at Alderman White School.

Feedback from all participants was extremely positive. “I am very pleased to learn so many tips on how to organise classroom activities and keep students engaged,” said one participant. “Today’s training is very inspiring and has gone far beyond my expectation. I can’t wait to try out all the good ideas I have learnt today in September,” said another.

“It’s great to see all attendees sharing their experience and good practices and engaging in discussions on current issues in teaching Mandarin in the UK. Today’s training programme has successfully offered everyone a career developement opportunity to be inspired by experts and colleagues in the same field. ” commented Prof Nan Li, NCI China Director at the closing ceremony.
