On February 2 hundreds of local residents joined the fun at the 2019 Temple Fair in the Old Market Square. The event was organised by Nottingham City Council along with the Chinese Students and Scholars Associations (CSSA) of both the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, supported by Nottingham Confucius Institute (NCI), Asia Business Centre and Hino Travel.

The fair ran from 10:30-17:00. The crowds were entertained with stage performances throughout the day, whilst dozens of tents and stalls offered Chinese New Year activities for people of all ages. There was a wide array of arts and crafts, including calligraphy, brush painting and paper cutting. Storytelling, music and dance filled many of the tents with enchanting sounds and laughter, but everyone stopped for dazzling stage acts such as CSSA’s Chinese Dragon Dance and a dazzling face changing routine from a local artist. Several stalls offered chances for people to try out authentic Chinese foods such as grilled mutton – so popular that people were willing to queue half an hour for it at lunch time!

Despite the cold weather, all NCI stands were well attended with people crowding four deep at times. The most popular activities proved to be the pig origami and paper cutting of zodiac animals (pictured on the right).

This was the fourth Temple Fair that has been run in Nottingham with strong support from NCI. The event has continually improved in terms of both scale and quality: more people, more fun, more great memories and more knowledge of Chinese culture and Chinese New Year celebrations!
