Understanding Excessive Exercise as part of an Eating Disorder

15. How can you help: Offer support

Changing your language around exercise, eating and body size, and setting an example for others to do the same is a really good start. Here are three further points for you and your team to consider when it comes to offering help and support:

  1. Try to create an easy way for people to disclose concerns if they want to - ideally in a way that doesn’t single out individuals but allows everyone to make the decision to come forward. An example could be to include an optional question concerning mental health in any regular meetings you may hold.
  2. Signposting to support: Discuss with your line manager or colleagues how you could signpost to support, e.g. to local or national organisations. There are online resources that locate services nearby (Examples of these websites are listed at the end of the tool).
  3. Non-judgemental atmosphere: This may take time to implement but aim to create an environment that optimises both physical and mental health. Do your best not to ignore or diminish any mentions of mental health struggles and be sure to listen if people do start talking about it.
