Freshers Week ends with Hallé Orchestra at the Royal Concert Hall

For 60 new Department of Music students, Freshers Week ended with an outing to Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall for an open rehearsal and concert by the Hallé Orchestra and Sir Mark Elder. The orchestra performed music by Verdi, Beethoven and Shostakovich, and the evening ended with late-night jazz and cocktails in the RCH’s bar.

The event was made possible by an increasingly close relationship between the Department and the Royal Concert Hall. This has resulted in performance opportunities for Department students, the RCH’s participation in the Department’s new ‘Work Placement’ module, and student ticket deals for orchestral concerts. Department academic staff also frequently give pre-concert talks at the RCH.

The Royal Concert Hall is one of the UK’s leading orchestral venues, with a seating capacity of 2,500. It hosts Nottingham Classics, a yearly season of concerts by leading British and European orchestras, and is renowned amongst conductors and musicians for its generous, open acoustic.
