Trauma and Orthopaedics

Trauma and Orthopaedics is one of the major growing areas in grant income within the School of Medicine and Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. We are a strong collaborative group with interests across the breadth of Trauma and Orthopaedics, Injury and Recovery.

Our senior academics include Professor Ben Ollivere (Trauma, Injury and Recovery), Associate Professor Alexia Karantana (Hand Surgery and Trials), Associate Professors Stefan Kluzek and Alan Norrish (Sports Medicine) and Associate Professor Tom Kurien (Knee Surgery and Pain).

We have a thematic, translational and applied research focus. All of our research targets musculoskeletal health and recovery. Be that following traumatic injury, following infection or as part of degenerative or inflammatory processes. Our research programmes are high impact influencing government policy, NICE guidance and the delivery of healthcare both in the UK and overseas.

At the heart of what we do are our interfaces with centres of excellence. The Musculoskeletal, Surgery, Inflammation and Recovery Theme to the BRC, the Centre for Evidence Based Hand Surgery, the Trauma Research Group, and our strong links with the National Rehabilitation Centre and the Centre for Sport, Exercise and Osteoarthritis Research Versus Arthritis.

We are funded by major grants from the NIHR programmes (HTA, EME, RfPB, DRF, BRCs), MRC, Industry and BBSRC.
