UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships – Round 8 (2023)

Calling all aspiring leaders in research and innovation! The School of Medicine is welcoming expressions of interest from early career researchers and innovators for Round 8 of the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships.

Successful applicants will join the School of Medicine’s world-leading transdisciplinary medical research community. Through collaborations with healthcare and industry, we respond to today’s challenges to translate our research into interventions that benefit patients, the NHS, and the wider population.

Due to the highly competitive nature of these fellowships and a cap on the number of submissions from the University of Nottingham, applicants must apply through one of the Schools and be able to demonstrate their support. The School of Medicine is inviting early expressions of interest from applicants. We are particularly keen to hear from applicants aligned to our BRC themes, our institutes – the Biodiscovery Institute and the Institute of Mental Health and the new state of art National Rehabilitation Centre. You can find more information about our research here.

How to apply

The Future Leaders Fellowships (FLF) are for early career researchers and innovators who are either

  • looking to establish or transition to independence or
  • developing their own original and ambitious plans within a commercial setting.

If you would like to express your interest in applying to Round 8 of the UKRI FLF, please email ms-research-cttee@nottingham.ac.uk by 17:00 on Wednesday 5 April 2023 with your contact details and brief information on your research proposal. The School will then arrange for you to discuss your proposed research with our research leaders, and once there is a clear fit to the School, a Research Development Manager will provide 1:1 support to develop your application. The University of Nottingham internal submission deadline is now extended to 14:00 on Friday 28 April 2023.

The UKRI FLF Offer

Support is available across UKRI’s remit, and there is no minimum or maximum award value (previous awards to University of Nottingham based fellows have been for between £1.2-£1.5m). Awards are for up to 4 years, with the option to apply to renew for a further 3 years. The support will enable each fellow to tackle ambitious and challenging research and innovation and develop their own careers.

Eligibility

There are no eligibility rules based on years since PhD or whether the applicant currently holds a permanent/open-ended academic position or job role. However, if applicants do not hold a PhD, they must be able to demonstrate equivalent research or innovation experience or training. To assess and justify suitability for the scheme with reference to the objectives of the programme, the person specification in Annex B available in the Round 8 guidance PDF ('Additional info' section of the call guidance) provides details.
