National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC)

The University of Nottingham and Loughborough University will lead the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) Clinical and Academic Partnership (NCAP), to help transform outcomes for people who have encountered life-changing injury, trauma or illness.

As one of the schemes in the government’s ‘New Hospital Programme’ (a commitment to build a number of new hospitals in the UK by 2030 backed by an initial £3.7 billion), the NRC is a proposal for a new 70 bed NHS rehabilitation facility, bringing research, innovation, education and training alongside clinical practice to drive excellence in rehabilitation.

It will be located on the Stanford Hall Rehabilitation Estate between Nottingham and Loughborough, 400m away from the new Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC), and will benefit from sharing facilities with the DMRC. Plans for the NRC are currently going through the approvals process with a target of treating patients by the end of 2024.

At the NRC, research, innovation, education and training will be fully integrated with clinical practice. This means that it will be uniquely placed to pioneer international research into clinical rehabilitation and rehabilitation products and technologies, and attract experts in the field. The NRC Clinical and Academic Partnership (NCAP), led by the University of Nottingham and Loughborough University, will deliver this activity. The NCAP brings together a ‘hub and spoke’ network of more than 20 universities across the country so that hundreds of educators and researchers can work with and learn from each other, co-ordinating the overall approach to rehabilitation research.
