GE SPINlab hyperpolarizing system is not a medical device in itself, but is designed for use in research studies for rapid visualization of metabolism at the cellular level using an MRI scanner. Metabolic imaging is still a new technology and where previously a system with similar capabilities required a clean room and a number of trained staff, the SPINlab system integrates a dedicated fluid path, quality control, and the ability to hyperpolarize a number of samples at the same time. Once the samples have been injected into the patient and have been imaged this new technique could allow doctors to to tell whether a tumour has shrunk and the treatment is working. A number of research projects will take advantage of SPINlabs capabilities.
