Referencing Journals

Reference styles do vary. The examples on this page may not match the preference of your School or Department - please check the guidelines from your School or Department to ensure you are following the preferred style.

Referencing print journals

References to journal articles should include the following:

• The author of the article - by surname and initial(s)
• Year of publication
• The title of the article
• The title of the journal (in italics or bold)
• The volume number
• The part or issue number
• The page numbers

Referencing ejournals

Many electronic journals are also available in print format. If this is the case, simply follow the instructions for referencing print articles given previously.

If the journal is only available electronically, however, references should include the following information:

• The author(s) - by surname and initial(s)
• Year of publication
• The title of the article
• The title of the journal (in italics)
• [online]
• The volume number
• The issue or part number
• The page numbers (if applicable)
• The date you viewed the online article
• The URL or DOI
