Biography of George Edward Arundell Monckton-Arundell, 6th Viscount Galway (1805-1876)

George Edward Arundell Monckton-Arundell was the eldest son of William George Monckton-Arundell, 5th Viscount Galway. He was educated at Harrow School and matriculated at Christ Church College, Oxford, in 1824, receiving his B.A. in 1827.

He succeeded his father as 6th Viscount in 1834. He was the Conservative M.P. for East Retford from 1847 until his death, and served as a Lord-in-Waiting from 1852-1853.

He was Master of the Grove Hunt from 1848-1876, and died from the effects of a hunting accident.

He married in 1838 his first cousin Henrietta Eliza (d 1891), only daughter of Robert Pemberton Milnes of Fryston Hall, Yorkshire, and had:

  • Correspondence relating to the 6th Viscount and Viscountess Galway is present in the second and third accruals of Galway papers (Ga C and Ga 2) held in Manuscripts and Special Collections at the University of Nottingham
  • Title deeds, settlements, estate and legal papers relating to the 6th Viscount's ownership of his estates are also part of the Galway papers
